The State Botanical Garden, a unit of the University of Georgia, is a 313-acre facility located in Athens, Georgia approximately three miles from the university campus. Established in 1968, the Garden serves UGA’s teaching, research and outreach missions, and is an outstanding public garden. More than 200,000 people visit the Garden annually. Four major buildings currently exist including a tropical conservatory. A new horticulture complex is currently under construction. The Garden contains several major theme gardens including the recently completed $1.8M Flower Garden along with five miles of nature trails. The individual gardens and facilities provide venues and opportunities for a wide range of educational programs and special events. The Garden presently has a full-time staff of 27, several part-time staff, and student workers, with approximately 150 volunteers.
The Director is the chief spokesperson and advocate for the Garden, and is responsible for fiscal, personnel and program management including operating policies, short- and long-term planning, and strategic goals. The successful candidate must have the ability to articulate the vision of the Garden and have strong management, administrative, communication, leadership and interpersonal skill to implement that vision. He/she should have a passion for botanical gardens, plant conservation, horticulture, environmental education and the essential role of university-affiliated botanical gardens.
The successful candidate should have an understanding of nonprofit organizations and academic institutions including contributed and earned revenue. The successful candidate must possess the skills to play a major role in fund raising and development, particularly the ability to be the "closer" on major funding requests as well as public and private grants needed to support the Garden and implement the master plan. He/she must forge effective relationships with University administrators, the Board of Advisors, the Friends of the Garden, and other constituencies.

| Requirements: | Masters required; an earned terminal degree in a discipline related to horticulture, plant biology, environmental design or closely related field is preferred.
